Parts of speech – these are the building blocks of English language. A sentence is made up of the following parts of speech:
Article, Adjectives, Adverb, Conjunction, Noun, Preposition, Pronoun, Verb

Articles
Ø Indefinite- A, An
Ø Definite- The
‘A’, ‘An’ are used for singular countable noun
‘The’ is used for a definite uncountable noun.
While using ‘A’, ‘An’ we need to take care of the sound of the noun if it is a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) –then use –‘An’. For consonant’s sound use ‘A’.
RULES:
1. Use of A /An
Singular noun (Countable)
Where adjective is placed before the noun, article ‘A’, ‘An’ is placed before the adjective.
Where adverb is placed before the adjective, article ‘A’, ‘An’ is placed before adverb.
HE IS ‘AN’ INTELLIGENT (Adjective) BOY (Noun).
2. A is used for counting:
A hundred, A dozen, A thousand, A couple, A billion, A pair
3. When a numerical and fractions are compounded then A is used.
Three and a half,
4. ‘A’, ‘An’ is also used with profession.
A Doctor, An Engineer, A Professor
5. When similarity is shown with a great personality.
SHE IS LIKE A MADHURI DIXIT.
HE IS A HARISH CHANDER.
6. Word like so, as, too, quite is placed before adjective/article. ‘A’, ‘An’ should be used after adjective.
SHE IS AS BEAUTIFUL GIRL, AS YOU ARE EVER LIKELY TO MEET.
THIS IS TOO TOUGH A TASK FOR ME TO COMPLETE.
7. Phrases carry ‘A’ with them-
At a stone’s throw, Make a noise, In a fix; Take an interest in, Tell a lie, A matter of chance-
8. A, An is used before a verb when it acts as a noun-
HE HAS GONE FOR A RIDE.
HE GOES FOR A WALK DAILY.
HE TALKS FLUENTLY IN ENGLISH.

9. Superlative degree- THE
RAM IS THE BEST SINGER.
10. Comparative degree –when comparison of two.
THE MORE YOU WORK HARD, THE MORE YOU WILL GET.
HE IS THE STRONGER OF TWO.
HE IS STRONGER THEN ME.
SHE IS THE MORE BEAUTIFUL BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR SISTER.
11. With comparative degree if the is used as an adverb.
THE HIGHER YOU GO, THE COOLER IT BECOMES.
12. Before the word same in case of comparison.
THIS IS THE SAME BOY THAT I SAW AT THE PARK.

· A geographical entity–The continent but NOT the Asia, the Europe
· The ocean–the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic, the Pacific
· The river–the Yamuna, the Thames, the Tiber, the Nile
· The island–the Andaman and Nicobar, the Lakshadweep
· The mountain–the Himalayas, the Andes
· The bay or gulf–the Bay of Bengal, the Persian Gulf
· The deserts–the Sahara, the Kalahari, the Arabian Sands
· Before the celestial bodies–the planet–the earth; the star–the sun
· Before the names of religious groups and religious and famous books–the Hindu, the Christian, the Quran, the Bible, the Iliad, the Mahabharata, the Ramayana
· The republic, the kingdom, the union–The People’s Republic of China, the United Kingdom, the United States.
· With superlative– the best, the rich
· The ordinals–the first, the last, the next
· Some comparatives–the better of the two; the more you try, the more you succeed
· For the head of a group–the President, the Prime Minister, the Head Boy.
· But he was elected President, appointed Head Boy.
But NOT with
Mountain peaks–Mt Everest, Mt Kilimanjaro
Lakes–Dal Lake, Chilka Lake, Lake Michigan
Names of places beginning with proper nouns–Delhi University, Indira Gandhi International Airport,
Mahatma Gandhi Road
Planets such as Mars, Jupiter
the names of religions–Hinduism, Christianity, Islam
Example:
Please give me a pen to write; not the one you gave me earlier but another.
1. Have your seen the movie playing at theatre? (No error)
2. Is this a phone that you gave me last night?( the phone)
3. The good leader leads the company to successful organization. (A good leader)
4. In this field of innovation, the credit goes to a man who convince the world with his arguments and not to the man who simply thinks.(the man)
5. It is the most beautiful painting of gallery. (The gallery)
6. It is a pity that the daughter of the millionaire is involved in the bank robbery. (a millionaire)
7. The most beautiful marriage would be a union of a deaf man to a blind woman. (The union)
8. He said that he felt nervous because a friend of his had given him a very bad news. (Very bad news)
9. He boasts of having the good knowledge of maths but everybody knows how far he is good at maths.
( a good knowledge).
10. Of the two answers, this is better. (The better)
11. The winters are generally very cold here. (Winters)
